I had my own observations on The pleaserobme controversy last week. A shift in our society has occurred the past few years. We have gone from initially fearing the security of the internet to anything/everything goes, your nobody unless everything about you is transparent. There is little to no digital hygiene that is of any concern with many of the nets younger users. This is all they have known since High School, so it must be safe, secure, and no problem. I don’t know where this all nets out for privacy and society. Caution is still necessary, storage is unlimited and cheap and everything is connected.

MCS*2000 textbook refers to these social networking sites as part of “the informal Grapevine”. Whether it be in cyberspace or by the coffee machine employees gossip and spread information. However, I think they should probably ban Facebook because there would be much more informal talk then work related talk. But then again, if you really want to be on Facebook you will do it through your Blackberry or iPhone…

“We haven’t been burned yet”. I think students care less about privacy because we have no image to uphold. Once we are professionals, managers, parents, teachers etc. We will care more about the information we put on networking sites such as Facebook. There are some pictures on Facebook that say 10-15 years down the road I would not be proud of if my kids found them.
