Google just recently turned 10 – yet it somehow seems like they’ve been around forever. Tech news is always filled with stories about Google and what they’re planning to do. While there is still plenty of speculation this week about Google (most notably with their entrance into the browser market), the majority of news stories are tidy little retrospectives about what Google has already done.
I’m sure most of you don’t doubt the dominance of Google (search dominance, map dominance, email dominance (debatable), advertising dominance – you get the picture), but if you’ve got some time have a glance at one of the articles below. It is stunning how important Google is to commerce and internet culture as a whole. My favourite phrase is from the Associated Press, stating that Google is the “world’s most powerful 10-year-old.”
It’s crazy to think that Brin and Page (Google’s founders) first offered to sell their search technology to Yahoo! or AltaVista for $1 million. When they were turned down, they started Google – now the company is worth more than $141 billion. Now of course Yahoo! and Google are talking advertising partnership (but that’s another story…)
